With
the background of his
earlier studies of
zoology in Copenhagen,
Gitz-Johansen visited
the fortress island of
Christiansø for the
first time in 1930. His
love of the abundant bird life
and birds became a
central motive for the
rest of his artistic
life. He captures the
natural beauty of the
animals and at the same
time often transforms
them into abstract
images.
